Smoldering fireworks caused a blaze that resulted in $1.3 million in damages to a house at 11006 Shalom Lane in Black Rock Estates east of Hagerstown early Tuesday.
Maryland State Fire Marshal Ed Ernst said the spent “ground-based sparkling devices” were put into a plastic trash can near the house and next to a gas grill, which did not explode but helped the fire spread

Hagerstown fire chief, deputy chief to retire

The chief and a deputy chief of the Hagerstown Fire Department plan to retire in June.
Gary Hawbaker has been the city’s fire chief since June 10, 1985, when he was hired, the city said in a news release.
He plans to retire effective June 25.
Deputy Fire Chief Ronald Horn also will retire.
Horn was hired in 1975
