Fire Fighters Stress Cooking Safety on Thanksgiving Day
Thanksgiving is leading day for home cooking fires
Tavares, FL - According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), cooking is the leading cause of home fires on Thanksgiving Day. A cooking fire is three times more likely on Thanksgiving than on any other day of the year.
“Most fires on Thanksgiving occur between noon and 4:00 p.m. – the peak cooking hours,” says Lt. Brian Gamble, Vice President of the Professional Firefighters of Lake County. “A lot of those fires can be easily avoided by staying alert and in the kitchen while cooking.”

Local firefighters' roles evolve as numbers fall 11/21/15 - IAFF Local 1009
Nationwide, numbers tell the tale. City and county fire departments across the U.S. responded to 62 percent fewer fires between 1977 and 2013, even as the number of career firefighters increased 56 percent since 1983, when the National Fire Protection Association began keeping track.
But in Massachusetts the numbers look different and in some ways seem to buck the national trend.
